Definition and Product of the Week 04.10.10

by Hilary Sopata

Each Saturday, we post a definition and a product of the week so that you can learn more about going green and what makes particular products green. This week, we define DECONSTRUCTION and the product of the week is STANLEY YOUNG AMERICA (green kids bedroom and green baby nursery furniture.)

Definition: DECONSTRUCTION (in our own words)

Deconstruction means that instead of demolishing a space or building, you or your contractors take things apart in order to reuse, recycle, or donate them.  When I had a client that was modernizing an apartment building, I saw value in the door moldings, old door knobs, and ancient sinks.  Instead of destroying and trashing these items, the contractor then took them apart carefully and I coordinated selling these items for my client to a salvage shop.  Doing this is certainly not going to make you rich, but it did save the client some money because they did not have to pay for the additional space in the dumpster for these items.  In this case, the moldings caught the attention of a movie set designer, and the salvage shop coordinated their reuse.

Product of the Week: STANLEY YOUNG AMERICA

This product line has always been a favorite of mine, but now my interest in them is renewed.  This is a line of green kids bedroom furniture that is focused on safety, quality, and the environment.  While many furniture companies are shipping their factories overseas increasing the carbon footprint of their products immensely, Stanley’s Young America furniture is still made in the USA.  Plus, their furniture is specifically designed to be used for a long time.  Made for safety and durability, the furniture pieces also have multiple purposes – cribs come apart and become beds and dressers have changing table tops that can be removed when no longer needed.
