Interview with Brenda Thompson of O Ecotextiles – Part 6

Brenda Thompson interviewed by Hilary Sopata, LEED AP

As we close out our final segment with you, Brenda, is there any other information that you think important or pertinent to your work or to people learning about going green?

I think it’s really important for people and especially people who are in the design industry (and that encompasses a huge percent of the working population) to educate themselves about the materials and products they purchase and promote. I truly believe designers have an obligation to tell their clients the toxins that are in the products and the risks associated with those products. Because Interior Designers often make the material selections, they can have a huge impact on the health of their clients and our environment.

The textile industry is going through some of the same growing pains as the food industry. It’s important to be informed buyers. Check the labels and see if the product is certified and most importantly who certified the product. There are many third-party certifiers and they all test differently. Just because a product is labeled “green” or organic, doesn’t mean that it’s truly healthy. For more information on third-party certification, go to www.oecotextiles.com.

Thank you for that.  I agree that we have to educate people about these things.  Michelle and I educate our clients and the public as a whole through client meetings, speaking engagements, and of course this blog!

What is the greatest impact that going green has made on your life?

A higher quality of life, saving more money and my family is healthier. What could be better than that?
