Definition and Product of the Week 06.05.2010

by Hilary Sopata

Each Saturday, we post a definition and a product of the week so that you can learn more about going green and what makes particular products green. This week, we’ll define XERISCAPING and the product of the week is TOTO AQUA II TOILET.

Definition: XERISCAPING (in our own words)

Xeriscaping in a nutshell is using native plants for your lawn or garden that don’t need a lot of special care to grow and thrive.  Traditional landscaping calls for – yep you guessed it – grass.  Grass needs to be fertilized, watered, and mowed.  When you really think about it, it is madness to cultivate it to only have to work harder when it grows well!  For most suburban dwellers, trucks need to come and haul away the clippings.  The alternative is to xeriscape and use naturally short tufted grass that doesn’t need a lot of water in places like California, patches of tall grasses in the Midwest (great for attracting butterflies), and, um, no grass but sand and cacti in the desert.

Product of the Week: TOTO AQUA II TOILET

Toto products are known for their water conservation features.  In fact, the reason the then rather small company grew so well in the 1990’s is that they already had water saving designs on the market in other countries when the USA EPA Act of 1992 required tighter water conservation standards.  I specified and my contractor installed this very toilet for a client of mine just this week.  It is sleek and well-designed.  There is a button on top that allows you to choose between 1.6 or 0.9 gallons per flush (gpf) depending on how much water you need at the time.  Why should you spend more money on a toilet when you can get one for a fraction of the price at a big box store?  There are several reasons: a better toilet manufacturer will glaze their trap where the waste goes down decreasing the opportunity for buildup, Toto does rigorous testing to make sure their toilets flush effectively, the water saving features can save you money over time, all the inner parts last longer (a bachelor I know bought a cheap toilet and has already had to change the flapper twice in seven years), and finally it simply looks so much better!
