Definition and Product of the Week 07.10.2010

by Hilary Sopata

Each Saturday, we post a definition and a product of the week so that you can learn more about going green and what makes particular products green. This week, we’ll define PHOTOVOLTAICS and the product of the week is REMAINS LIGHTING.

Definition: PHOTOVOLTAICS (in our own words)

Photovoltaic cells are cells that use sunlight to create electricity.  They differ form a solar hot water heater because solar hot water heaters use the sun’s warmth to heat the water directly while photovoltaics might make electricity for your hot water heater.  It is possible for homes to incorporate both photovoltaic technology and a solar hot water heater in the same home.  Overall, solar energy is clean and renewable.  Be sure to choose a solar panel model that has been made as close as possible to where you live in order to save the carbon emissions from travelling which would otherwise just be given off by your mainstream electricity sources.  If you’re trying to save carbon emissions and the environment, it is counterproductive to buy a product made really far away.

Product of the Week: REMAINS LIGHTING

I’ve been to a Remains Lighting store and it has gorgeous pieces installed in a non-fussy atmosphere.  It was an enjoyable experience.  From their website, “First opened in a Chelsea loft in April of 1996, Remains Lighting sold architectural salvage including antique lighting, bronze grilles, fireplace mantels, stained glass windows and vintage plumbing.”  They continue to be an excellent source for lighting, and they are sustainable, too.  Remains Lighting does not discharge waste into local water sources, they do reuse packaging and use sustainable packaging, they don’t use bottled water but instead use filtered tap water, they are a bicycle friendly company and encourage eco-friendly methods of transportation for their employees to get to work, they have composting on site, and are overall a fabulously eco chic company.
