Definition and Product of the Week 08.21.2010

by Hilary Sopata

Each Saturday, we post a definition and a product of the week so that you can learn more about going green and what makes particular products green. This week, we’ll define RENEWABLE RESOURCE and the product of the week is BONDED LOGIC DENIM INSULATION.

Definition: RENEWABLE RESOURCE (in our own words)

A renewable resource is one that is pretty much infinite.  For instance, if you cut down a tree and use the lumber, you can grow more trees.  Sunlight keeps coming to us every day.  Wind is limitless.  You can shear a sheep without hurting it and it keeps growing more wool.  These are some examples of renewable resources.  Non-renewable resources would be things like coal or natural gas or oil.  While it is possible that we can produce more, it takes way too long.  One day, we will have to wean ourselves off of these resources as they become more and more scarce.  By turning our attention to renewable resources, we will be able to sustain the industrial age.  Now, why did I say “pretty much infinite?”  Well, who knows if there will come a time when trees, sun, wind, and sheep don’t exist?  However, for now, we need to concentrate on sustaining life on Earth.

Product of the Week: BONDED LOGIC DENIM INSULATION

Don’t you hate throwing your old blue jeans in the trash?  I make purses and other clothes out of mine whenever possible.  However, Bonded Logic has created a whole new way to repurpose denim; They make it into insulation!  From their website: “UltraTouch [denim insulation] contains no chemical irritants and requires no warning labels compared to other traditional products. There are no VOC concerns when using UltraTouch, as it is safe for you and the environment.”  It also does not make you feel itchy like other types of rolled insulation.  I have seen this type of insulation in person, and I love it!  Go to their website listed below for more information about considering denim insulation for your next project.
